A tale as old as time

We went to the Theatre Calgary production of ‘Beauty and the Beast‘ on Friday night at the Max Bell Theatre in the Epcor Centre. It was a really good show. The story is basically the same as in the Disney cartoon version, with a few more songs thrown in and some extra sexual tension between Lumiere the candle and Babette the feather duster (second best line of the night, Babette to Lumiere in a thick french accent: “I’ve been burned by you before!”).

Without a doubt the best character in the show was Gaston. The actor who played him did a great job selling Gaston as this over the top egotistical mass of muscle who cared more about his own good looks than anyone else’s feelings.

The best song of the night was ‘Be Our Guest’. There’s something about dancing plates and knives and forks that can be quite weird yet entertaining

My pet peeve about going to the theatre is still the fact that they never let you bring in your drink or overpriced ice cream back to your seats, so you have to scarf it down during intermission. But other than that, it was a good night out.

And my choice for best line in the show, when Chip the teacup/boy became human again he says to his mother Mrs. Potts, ‘Do I still have to sleep in the cupboard?’
